In 2002, one of our most popular and talked about presentations was the "Assets" presentation. The Assets framework believes that, in order to work together as a community to develop an agenda for our children and families, it is essential that the community have a common philosophy and language to frame its discussions and recommendations. The Assets framework gives a role for everyone in the community in building assets, which are the essential qualities, experiences, and skills that support successful growth and development. The Assets Framework is based on research by the Search Institute of Minneapolis. The basic structuring of the Assets Framework consists of 40 building blocks, or assets, that young people need in order to become healthy, caring and responsible citizens. The studies show that, ideally, every infant, child and teenager should have 40 assets. Nationally, the average young person experiences 18 of the 40 assets.
